Safe drinking water at low costs and maintenance

Still 1.8 million people use a contaminated source of drinking water. Every 20 seconds, a child dies of drinking polluted water. In 2010 the team behind Villagepump decided to build a pump that can produce safe drinking water at low cost and low maintenance. The Villagepump yields at least 500 litres of fully purified drinking water an hour in compliance with international standards for micro-biological content (WHO, TSS and NTU). The units can operate using all forms of surface water, including ponds, lakes and streams. How does it work and how do they stay operational in remote areas?
